Now that my computer is up and running normally (and there is nothing on telly) I've been cruising around the interweb - propelled by that 'Sturdy Girl' song I mentioned earlier - looking at what other music is out there.

I paid a visit to Brad Sucks - which I have previously mentioned - and found one of his new tracks that I really quite like. Its called We're Not Friends, check it out.

From there I moved on to Magnatune - an internet based record label for all those small artists. It actually does a lot of the things I said I wanted to see when I was moaning about the music industry the other day. Basically the site promotes the music that the artists send to it and does all the hard slog needed to make money from it. They produce CD's and sell them to people, try and sell the licence for the stuff to be used in commercials, films, games etc. The artist still has full rights to the songs he sends and he can sell them elsewhere if he likes. Profits are just split 50/50 on whatever is made.

Its actually really good. You can listen to all the tracks (in good quality) as much as you like on the website and if you like, can buy a CD of the album at a price you decide (there is a minimum price of $5). Go pay it a visit I say. I'm currently listening to 'Indidginus: organic didgeridoo meets electronic voodoo'.....

See, this annoys me. Winds farms are in my opinion great but whenever there are moves to set one up somewhere you always get people complaining. Quoting from the article:

"Environmental campaigner Thierry Yverneau, whose house is 700 metres behind the proposed turbine site, started a peitition against the plans.

He says it is not wind energy he is against, but the huge turbines dominating the historic site of Agincourt, known as Azincourt in France."

How can he call himself an environmental campaigner? You read between the lines and its not the fact that this will be near an historical site that he has a problem with - its a bloody field, people dont go to see the wonderfull view! No, its because its near his house pure and simple!! I'm not saying he doesn't have a valid point and maybe it will be noisy or spoil his view out the window (although personally I think they look good) but I really wish people like this would just be honest and give that as the reason they are against it rather than trying to hide behind some other issue. Maybe its because they know they are being selfish?

I have decided, I definitely need a hat! I never wear hats - except the santa one I bought this Christmas and wore to the pub and around work for a few days - but I think I need one now. This realisation came to me last night as the snow settled in a small pile on my head on the way home. Not good when you have hair as short as mine.....

On another note, my damn computer is playing up at the moment. Whilst surfing the internet a couple of days ago the mouse pointer froze a few times. Its a cordless mouse - batteries just need replacing I thought. I swapped it over for a PS2 mouse temporarily but then my computer started randomly rebooting every hour or so. Now its getting more frequent and I have changed the mouse back over. I downloaded an application from MS called Pstat which might help me track the problem down. I do hope I'm not going to have to reinstall again....

On yet another not, I did find some nice new P2P software to use. Its called Shareaza and connects to the Gnutella, Gnutella2, EDonkey and BitTorrent networks. Its also free, no spyware and seems nice to use. Not that I'm saying filesharing is a good thing of course....

Not going to have much time to blog today due to this little virus. Not that it can actually do much damage to our machines as most are protected fully. Does mean having to answer sooooo many questions about "should I delete this funny email" and "I never sent a virus to this person but it says I did - am I infected?".

What really annoys me is email hub virus software. Almost all viruses nowdays 'spoof' the senders address so why do all these programs insist on emailing the spoofed person back to tell them they have a virus? It causes lots of people who don't have the virus to think they do and panic. It makes for a hell of a lot more email - probably doubling the amount that the virus itself causes. And the person that actually has the virus is none the wiser anyway!

Anyways remember, if it looks suspicious todays dont open it and just delete it!!!

Made me ponder this place again. I'm currently two thirds of the way through my first year of blogging and going okay. Will I still feel like that a year from now? Will I grow bored? I know sometimes I still get a little mixed up about what to put in here - do I just dump links or should I be writting about my day. Is anyone interested in my opinions and do they really want to hear me moan? Guess the bottom line is that I do enjoy having some sort of online presence. Maybe the place will evolve with time but I can't see me finishing it entirely anytime soon.

A couple of the people at dinner last night were telling us about a trip they had made to Ikea earlier in the day. They had gone in determined to only purchase the table lamp that they had already decided upon (which of course was sold out) but as anyone that has gone to Ikea knows, its impossible to get out of the store without buying something you didn't intent to....

In their case this meant they ended up with a different table lamp, several lampshades, a saucepan lid rack (???) and several other items. Maybe they would have benifited from the IKEA WALKTHROUGH v2.3.1?!

The wonder that is Monday rolls round yet again heralding the start of yet another thrilling week no doubt! Ah, maybe it wont be so bad?!

Feeling very tired but that's because yesterday saw yet another Sunday and yet another group of dinner guests. I should really learn to avoid the wine on Sunday night if I have to get up at 5:30am the next day.....

Was a pretty lazy weekend all in all. Apart from basketball on Saturday I did very little. Finally got around to watching Reign of Fire on Satuday night although I was in two minds as th whether I could be bothered to sit through it. Another of those 'looks good but rubbish story' films that there seem to be so many of. I really can never understand how someone at some stage of making the film doesn't look at the script and go "Hang on, this story is a bit pants really isn't it!".

The only other big news from the weekend is that I have finally bought my own domain name! Of course that meant I just happened to come across a website this morning where I could probably have got my hosting much cheaper but oh well, thats life! I'm not divulging the name just yet, but expect the new site to be up in the next few weeks......

Went out after work with a few mates last night. Things were going well up untill the point where I decided to show everyone how easy it was to jump into a puddle and not get wet, which of course left me with soaking wet jeans up to my knees. Not easy trying to get your leg to the height of the hand dryer in the pub toilets you know....

I don't even have a hangover this morning which is a good thing. I was on my way towards giving myself one when we left one bar and took 15 mins to get to the next place. And this next place was just a pub rather than a lively bar. As I was up for a night out and not a quiet drink at your local, I kinda lost interest in having anymore to drink and went home.

In case anyone is wondering as well, my arm is much better. Been cleaning it out the last couple of days and although the little wound I had is now a rather large and disgusting looking sore on my arm, the swelling and redness I had before is gone!

With the launch of MyCokeMusic.com recently and the news that the UK music industry might follow the RIAA and start sueing illegal music downloaders, I started thinking a bit more about the issues of downloading music.

Okay, its wrong. I know that. But you give someone the choice of paying £10-15 for a cd or getting it free and you can't blame them for being tempted! The problem is the music industry just does not seem to want to listen or change how it handles things.

I dont know about you but I kinda class albums into three groups. First you have the album that has the one track you heard on the radio and really liked on it. Its the album you buy and find that you don't like any of the other songs and wish you'd never spent that potential beer money on. Its the album you download (illegally) and then delete cos its so rubbish.

Then you have album type two. Its got several songs on that you like but most just don't do anything for you. The album you buy and listen to once in a while but which really spends most of its time sat in your CD rack gathering dust. The album you download and burn to CD just cos for the sake of a blank CD, why not?!

Then there is type three. You love this album. Maybe there are one or two tracks on it you're not that keen on and get skipped when its played but it spends a lot of time in your CD player. This is the album that you download and after a few listens are tempted to go and buy just so you can have the proper CD!

The real problem thats causing the damage for the music industry is that people can actually listen to the music first now and make an informed choice. And that informed choice will prevent them from spending money on type 1 and 2 albums. Even type 3 are less tempting to buy at the stupidly high price they are in the shops.

The way I see it prices have to be lower. Low enough to tempt people back to the shops to get the albums they want and low enough to make them want to download all those odd songs they like. And the choice of downloadable music has to be greater (and free to listen to) to tempt people to browse more widely. The current legal download sites are a start but still not what people want - not what I want anyway....

I should have been a doctor you know. That large sore area on my arm that I mentioned yesterday actually got worse today. So after getting back from work I proceeded to carry out a little DIY doctoring on myself....

Twenty minutes with a large needle, lots of prodding and squeezing, the odd yelp and 10 minutes of soaking in salty water (I seem to remember that's a good thing) and I'm left with an arm thats - well... hurting a lot more than it did before to be honest. And just as swollen. So okay, maybe the medical profession was not my calling. Still I'm hoping that a good nights sleep will fix things right up. Well it can't get worse can it?

*Note from common sense - considering it started as a tiny zit and now you have a throbbing patch 3 inches across and your whole arm feels funny, don't count on it.

On another note I was thinking about these new laws to take away sperm donors anonymity. I really have a hard time understanding this. Not the medical reasons - I get that having access to DNA data and the medical histories of the donors could be important for the conceived child in the future. No, what I don't get is these kids 'needing' to know about thier biological parent!

If anonymity is removed the numbers of donors will fall. The price these kids are paying for having a life at all is that they will not know thier genetic parent! Life is about what you do with it. Its about your own experiences, your own past. Its not about someone else' life or past. Its interesting to know these things maybe, but not something that will dramatically change your life or the person you are surely?

In some ways I think the people pushing for this change are very selfish. They say that the child has the basic right to know its biological parent. If the number of donors drops because of this - which it will - they are removing the childs right to even have that choice by removing its chance for life at all. Which would that potential child choose if it could - life or a family history?

I am so gullible sometimes. Okay maybe gullible is not the right word - trusting! Some sales person just phoned me up - not an uncommon occurence - and proceeded to chat to me about the weather and his job for 5 minutes like we were best friends. It happens so I just ignored it. Then he says he is sending a free gift for all our good custom - "OK" I say but stress that I can't accept it personally and it would belong to the department. I was a little suspicious at that point but if someones says they are sending you free stuff who is going to say no - especially as I've not committed to anything!!

The he starts saying about sending us a load of printer toner cartridges and asking for an account code. I dont have one. Couple of minutes of him trying to ask who's name he should put on the invoice and getting nowhere and he abruptly finishes the call.

So now I'm a little worried. I know I shouldn't be - I gave no account information or requested anything be sent here so its just his word against mine. Right? And the fact that he hung up is a good sign. Bollocks!

Really need to learn not to fall for these things. It was the same when I signed up for a Burtons store card just before Christmas.....

That'll teach me I suppose. Had a teeny tiny little spot on my arm a couple of days ago that I made the mistake of fiddling with. I now have a red, sore and swollen patch about 2 inches in diameter that hurts when I prod it. Oh well, as long as I dont get some sort of blood poisoning and my arm doesn't fall off I should be okay.....

I was also very good today and made myself some sandwiches to have at lunch time. Lessons learnt from this experience
a) Make sure you have some margarine left.
b) Make sure you have something to put the sandwiches in.

I'll get better ovr the next few days - honest....

Got back a little while ago from a trip to the cinema to see The Return of the King. Left work a little early so that I could at least get home sometime before midnight!

It was good. Not excellent but not bad. Maybe I was expecting too much? I've read a lot of fantasy books so maybe my expectations are too high but I just found it lacking in areas. I would have loved to see some serious magic - I mean, what good did Gandalf do? He spent most of his time killing orcs with his sword or staff - where were the lightning bolts and fireballs? And some of the tactics the armies used were just daft - seems they only knew two things, attack and retreat. Not very subtle or cunning. I know you expect characters to do unbelievable things in fantasy stories, but not plain stupid things! More dwarfs were needed too! And I dont think anyone would disagree that the last 30 mins was totally dull....

Anyway I came back, had me a little food and then quickly checked my email to find a nice message (which I will reply to shortly) from Erin whose blog I linked to the other day. Seems I am the first one to do so. Its really nice to hear from people that you link to like that.

So my weekend is going okay so far. I was good on Friday night and only had three drinks before making my excuses and leaving to get some food on the way home. Probably wise as without food those 3 drinks had already started to affect me. I wasn't as drunk as some people that night tho (they know who they are).

Yesterday was much more energetic. Went into town in the afternoon and got myself some new hair clippers. Had my old pair for ages and I thought cordless would also be good. Seems really easy to use - more so than the last one. Its a bit of an art doing your own hair but it gets easier after a bit of practice and saves soooo much money on going to the hairdressers!

Played basketball late afternoon and that was tiring! Now I know I'm no Michael Jordan but I do have a few skills. Probably the only thing that makes me better than the others I play with is my score/miss ratio. I was always good at shooting and I'm about the only one that can lay up. Makes me look better than I am really I think. Only problem, I get marked a lot and always seem to end up on the team with one less player!!

After all that expenditure of energy a takeaway was in order. Ended up really stuffed as they got the order wrong so we got an extra dish when they realised and brought the correct one round 5 minutes later. Can't complain I supose.

Also watched the first episode in the new series of Angel. Seems to be as good as always - my only gripe is that it's shown on Tuesdays (pub quiz night) and for some reason Sky will only show the repeats in stupid late night slots. Pah!

Right, feeling too lazy to do much today but I may do some webpage work I've been meaning to do before tidying up for when people come round for dinner tonight....

Enough of the linkage for today I think. Its actually more tiring than it would seem to trawl around for stuff. Its just the sheer amount of junk you have to wade through to find something decent to link. I could just steal the stuff direct from a couple of other sites, but I only ever do that when really lazy...

Only 50 sweet minutes left until it is the weekend. Few drinks tonight I think, but maybe not going over the top. That will be left for tomorrow!

What others plans for the weekend? Well its basketball tomorrow and I just hope I don't strain something again. Perhaps I'll just leave the running to the rest of my team and co-ordinate from the back. Yeah, that'll work. Dinner for a few people again at our house on Sunday night - should be fun.

As weekends go I think that sounds pretty decent. Not as decent as an all weekend snogging contest at the Cadbury factory but not bad.

Been doing some thinking. Unusual I know but there you go. What I have been thinking about is money.

Money is not usually something that bothers me. It's there and if I want something I go and get it! Because I'm not exactly prone to buying things on a whim all the time and splashing out on stuff I really dont need, its a lifestyle I can keep up easily. Last few months have been a little different tho and thats what got me thinking.

Trip to Japan, Christmas, Venice trip, new telly and soon a trip to the dentist (definitely got a small hole in one of my back teeth and I know that cos I've not been in ages it'll cost me an arm and a leg when I do go) - all fairly large withdrawls. Whilst not a major issue I did start to wonder if I could save a little here and there and the more I thought about it the better the idea sounded.

For instance, lunch! I always spend a couple of quid on crisps and chocolate (I need chocolate to see me through the day) and a boring sandwich. If I bought in my own lunch I'd save a few quid every week! Don't really need to drink beer every night (I know it sounds like crazy talk but still). And I'll stop getting my contact lenses from the optician and get them direct from an online supplier instead. If I make lots of little savings like that here and there I'll have saved a couple of hundred quid before you know it! The reduction in my alcohol consumption might even be good for me?

Had such a busy day today, yet not sure why? One of those days where you can't really pinpoint anything in particular that's taken up your time, but the time flew by none the less.

I have managed a few things of importance tho. First, my flights and hotel are now booked for Venice on the 1st March. Getting a little excited about it now its all official and actually happening! More about that soon....

I also managed another thing that needed to be done by tomorrow - something I'd not done before so hope I did it properly. Can't say what as its someone else' secret so I have to keep quiet.

I also finally managed to send a birthday card to my friend Soph who's birthday it was yesterday. Belated birthday wishes! Speaking of belated wishes I have been meaning to send my congrats to friends Ben and Liz who had their first baby a few weeks back. Awwww.........

Inspiration for all those 'festively plump' people out there.

I'm totally out of shape after xmas - would you believe I strained a muscle playing basketball on Saturday and was walking with a limp for 2 days!

Maybe its just me, but I wouldn't want my phone telling people where I was or giving out other information about me or what I was doing at the time. I'd want it to be able to make phone calls and send texts! Call me old fashioned......

Life is definitely against me at the moment! Its true. Just take this weekend.....

First I went to get some lottery tickets - just a couple as once in a while I reach that stage where a large win on the lottery seems like my most likely route to happiness! Somehow the bloke at the checkout managed to get another slip mixed up with mine (I'm sure he found it on the floor) and I ended up with 6 tickets! And none of them won anything!

Then after a night of drinking I stopped for a kebab on the way home and when informed that there was no chicken and asked if lamb would do, ended up with a yucky tub of meat and nothing else (yeah I ate it - I was hungry).

Then Sunday the TV broke. Off we went and within a few hours had a nice new JVC telly which I'll admit looks very nice but also set me back £140. Money that could have been spent on other nice presents for myself.

Finally today I look at booking the plane tickets to Venice, only to find that most of the tickets that were on sale on Friday at EasyJet have gone and tickets are now double the price.

Things can only improve, right!?

Play Money is the blog of Julian Dibbell and his experiment into making his sole source of income the sale of imaginary goods. He plays Ultima Online and sells his stuff onto other players. He's not exactly making a fortune but its not a bad sum....

Big business the trade of virtual goods nowdays as shown by the opening of a virtual stock exchange for several online games.

You can probably expect to see a little more of me here the next few days. Why you may ask? Well, I'd been quite happily watching TV for a while this morning when I decided to go for a shower. I got up and hit the 'standby' button only to be greeted by a large electrical sounding 'crack'. "Hmmmmm?" thinks me, "Odd....".

So I tentatively turn it back on again only to hear the same noise and (upon leaning over the back of the TV) detect a worry smell of burning. So I obviously try again, gaining more confidence each time that I'm not about to be showered with little peices of exploding television set - the age old technique of vainly repeating the same proccess in the hope that somehow things will be different the next. I'm sad to say though that nothing did change so we are now without the wonders of Sky TV.

I'm already suffering withdrawl so I'm trying to ease it with a healthy shot of the interweb......

Todays environmental news.

Global warming is a bigger threat than terrorism.

People are also adopting a more lavish lifestyle which is leaving the world impoverished. Makes you think when you look at the figures and realise that if people spent half as much on make-up, perfume and ice cream, that we could eliminate world hunger and go a fair way to providing clean water to everyone!

It feels good when you can do something nice for someone. You may remember that one of my New Years resolutions was to do something nice for my best friend. I asked her today if I could take her for lunch. She was pleased (as any lady would be at the prospect of lunch with moi) but I wanted more. So then I told her where I was going to take her for lunch. Wish I could have seen her face!!

I think I am making a good start at those resolutions....

I hate really petty people. How can this person think that an advert is going to make people want to play music loud? The people influenced by the advert are likely to be the people that 'like' to play music loud in the first place!

My head feels like its full of Play-doh today. My own fault I guess. I am on early shift so I should have been trying to get an early night when possible this week. Instead I've been out drinking. Last night was not my fault tho, it was a combined night out for my friend Kerrys birthday and other friend Lisa's going away party.

Had a nice tai meal but I drank far too much wine. It was supposed to be split evenly between me and the two girls, but they didn't pull their weight and my glass kept getting filled.

So now I am sat here, trying to focus on the screen through eyes that keep trying to close. How long I can fight this before I fall asleep and start dribling on my keyboard I can only guess at....

There is nothing worse than playing pool after a long period of not playing. You get there, you remember how good you were 6 months ago when you last played and then - after only a few minutes of knocking the balls around - realise that you are once again crap. You hope it will get better as the evening progress but invariably the more infuriated you get with yourself over the loss of your once great skills, the worse you become.

God I was bad last night!

Still, with 9-ball night once again becoming a regular feature of my week I can only hope that those long dormant potting talents will begin to surface very soon....

Today is a sad day in the blogging world as it see's the end of a great blog and one of my regular reads, Life in the Hard Shoulder. Pob will be missed!

I do understand his reasons for leaving however. In some ways I wanted this blog to be public. Somewhere that I could just post about the ordinary daily goings on in my life and dump a few links. That if a friend thought

"I wonder what BlogMonkey is up to at the moment?"

they could stick my name into Google and with 30 mins be up to date with my life in general. I often say to people

"You want to know about that? Yeah, its all in my blog if you want to look- it's easy to find.".

The problem comes when you say more than you should. Its easy to do. You have a really bad or a really good day and just feel like putting it into words and sharing. Or maybe have a few drinks and start to waffle randomly about life (as if I've ever done that...*ahem*). Before you realise, you have shared a little more about yourself than you'd want some of your casual friends to know. Or maybe said something about someone/something that will cause things to be a little 'awkward' if the wrong person reads it.

The obvious answer is two blogs but who has time for that! I'll just have to keep making sure I censor myself - done a reasonable good job so far. Its a fine line I walk though and I can see a good chance of a fall....

In the meantime Pob will be replaced on my blogroll. For your viewing pleasure may I inroduce Bunniblog.

Gossip. We all do it I guess. Some love listening to it. Some love spreading it. Most tho - like me - will just slip a small snippet into conversation now and again. Why? Well, I think it has something to do with wanting to be popular - the centre of attention. Nothing like watching people listen intently as you divulge a peice of information that none of them have previously heard. You may not even realise its happening until too late.

A lot of the time its harmless. Sometimes though you end up saying more than you should, or saying it to the wrong person. That's what happened to me today. I felt guilty for a while, wishing I'd stopped and thought before speaking. Then I remembered that the person affected has done similar to me or others on several occasions. Teasing about things they only thought they knew about or quizzing for information I wont let them have. My guilt was short lived after that.

Still, it did make me think. I often talk before considering what I am doing and maybe that's something I need to work on? Another new years resolution maybe....?

Excuse me while I do a bit of rambling. Been doing a bit of wandering around the old interweb this evening - partly cos I'm bored and partly cos of the wine I've been drinking (no, I don't know why drinking wine should make me want to surf either but there you go). On my travels I have found a few blogs I feel deserve a mention simply for the fact that they held my attention for longer than 30 seconds. Usually I'll visit a blog (from the recently updated list on the front page of Blogger and be hitting the back button almost straight away. These tho made me want to look a little further. I'm not saying you should go and look at them, not saying you shouldn't....

We have a blog which I believe is called Foxfires (although there is no page title to go from) which I like for a few reasons. One is the music on the page which suited my mood tonight - might actually email to find out who it is. Then I found these two personal weblogs - Wandering Days and A Day in the Life of a Serial Complainer.

I also popped back to the blog of my housemates friend, Simply Rojak - something I do on occasion. Was going to dedicate a post to that blog once before after I found a long posting about Dragonlance but never got around to it. There was another post on the subject about a week ago which - if you ever read the books - you might want to read. Changing the names - pah! I had sooooo many of those books (still do much to my mums distress as they are all still at her house), probably about 80 or so if I remember rightly. Maybe more. Now thats what you call a series and a world you can become immersed in. Thought the last few before the company went bust or were taken over or whatever it was that happened to them, were fairly poor. Still.

Also turns out she just bought Neverwinter Nights which she played for most of the night before watching the new He-Man cartoon. Sounds almost like a female version of me - except I probably would have been watching Invader Zim instead.....

Okay, really should stop now. Have to go on early shift tomorrow as my workmate lost his access card so can't get in the building! I'm the boss yet still seem to do all the covering for others.... Anyway, early night it is for me. One last thing whilst I on the subject of books - don't read the latest book in the Wheel of Time saga. If you thought the last few were starting to get bogged down, this is even worse. Nothing at all happens, and I really do mean nothing. I had to force myself to finish it. And would you believe rather than finishing the damn saga he has written a prequel!!!! Looks lik
