Weird
I shouldn't laugh really but I can't help it. Man has his takeaway stolen by
a mugger in a wheelchair.
Woke up this morning...
Its official. I have definitely lost interest in work and everything else this week. Maybe its the weather, maybe I've just hit a rut? I've tried my usual tested methods of curing the blues -
beer,
ice cream in large quantities and making fun of those less fortunate than me but alas all have failed to cheer me up. Maybe like Breakup Babe all I need is some
hope that things can get better?
Environmental
Its sobering sometimes to see the destruction and change humans can cause when we are not even trying. The
destruction of the Aral Sea - once the fourth largest lake on Earth - is causing
problems for the people living near it as well as the environment. Estimates say that in maybe just 15 years the area could be a desolate wasteland not just because of the destruction of the lake but because of the high level of pollution that will make the area uninhabitable. All because of cotton farming....

Well it worked for Popeye and now it seems that spinach could soon be providing the rest of us with energy too. Not the sort that will let us lift anvils and knock down walls but the sort that could

Ooops
Oh dear, I am in so much trouble. One of my colleagues is not too happy with me after I just convinced her that the new door for wheelchair access to the building was voice activated (even tho it has a big button that says "press here" on it). Was funny watching her talk to it tho....

Entertainment
Today I stumbled across the pilot for a program created in 1999 that was never even shown on TV -
Heat Vision and Jack. It stars
Jack Black (he of the quite cool band
Tenacious D and star of several films I've liked) as an astronaut who becomes hyper intelligent when in the sunshine and Heat Vision, his best friend who has become merged with his motorbike (voiced by Owen Wilson). Sounds cheesy cos that's exactly what it is. Definitely worth watching (try downloading
here although you can probably find it in other places).
"Knowledge is Power - For Real!"
Following a link from that I found
Robot Bastard. It's kinda like the old black and white Flash Gordon series in terms of special effects and props, but contains more gore and swearing. I liked it. A lot.

Forget Spider-man from a couple of posts ago, what about a real life Incredible Hulk? A genetic mutation has led to this

Religion
So a vicar that has become bored of counting coins donated at the end of weddings in his church will
now only accept notes. Seems that years of taking in the collection plate to often find less than £10 has led to this move. He does say that
"... so far three weddings have been conducted under the new arrangements and there had been only one complaint" but you'll notice fails to mention how much was actually collected in each case. Presumably because its now only a fiver.....

Facts and figures
The last couple of days I've been taking a look at my logs for this place. Not as easy as it sounds as I refuse to pay the extra for detailed stats from my web host (that's worth 5 pints a year!) so have to work with the raw logfile. Importing into Excel, a little filtering for hits on the main page and archives, removing crawlers and the several hundred hits that are me accessing at home and work and I finally get what I'm after.
Seems I am currently getting about 800 hits a month which is not bad at all. Be interesting to see when that reaches 1000 although I might need to do a little work to get listed on a few other sites to help with that. Being one of the top referrers at
Dailylinx has gained me a fair few new hits the last couple of days for instance.
Then of course there are the search results that bring people here. I can't go without mentioning them can I. I'm very sorry that the person looking for pictures of Carol Vordermans arse in tight trousers didn't find what they wanted. I have no information on how to make homemade electrodes for your nipples I'm afraid and the person that ended up here wanting to know what to get his aunty for her birthday, well maybe you found something that helped?
From victory we snatch defeat
So England
lose again. Am I surprised - no, you could see this coming a mile off. The only time we ever look like playing with any backbone is when we are a couple of goals up against a rubbish side. The rest of the time we play like a team of wet lettuce. Stop moaning about the disallowed goal and the penalty spot, the best side won last night. And there is definitely no need to do
this!! Bunch of braindead morons....
Worst of all I lost a bet about the score at 90 minutes and now owe someone a drink!!

Boredom and cakes
You ever have one of those days where every minute seems to drag by sooo slowly yet at the end of the day you have no idea where the time went? That's me today. I've spent most of it working the helpdesk where approximately once an hour I've had to answer some highly technical IT related question ("No, you can't borrow my stapler!!"). Sigh - I need a new job.
I'm also feeling a little ill. I was having a conversation this morning about cakes and it brought back all these memories of the sweet things I'd eaten when I was younger. So, come lunchtime, I headed straight for the nearest bakers and spent several minutes perusing the assorted cream filled, chocolate covered and iced treats. I finally settled on a large iced doughnut and a coconut meringue thing with a cherry on. Maybe I shouldnt have had the crisps and sandwich too...

Environmental
In my continuing efforts to plug my
charity blog next month, here is an article on the
destruction of the rainforest in Gabon. Sponsor me - you know you want to.....
Also an article
here about using solar panels at home should you be interested.
Whilst on environmental stuff, you might want to have a look at
this page. There are links to a lot of articles and comments from many people that might make you think twice about what you know on issues like recycling and global warming. I might have a little post about this another day....

New blogs revisited
Last week, to celebrate 1 year of being a blogger, I picked out a few new blogs that I had come across. Since then I have been keeping an eye on them and today thought I would review them once more to see which little acorns had taken the first steps and grown into strong saplings and which had been nibbled by squirrels and cast aside.
You Can't Make It Up made a strong impression right from the start. She's funny, finds unusual stories that most people are not blogging about and posts regularly (36 in a week so far). She was also nice enough to email me and thank me for the link last week. Plus I think her hair is cool. A regular read and now added to my blogroll.
5/5 and a smiley face - Excellent
The
Bosinia Project has died a quiet and lonely death - nothing but the welcome post since it was created.
0/5 - Please try again.
Jersey Girl Genius still shows potential but is so far lacking in content. I'm reserving judgement for now.
3/5 - Keep up the good work.
Thoughts of the Cat started with a nice first post but unfortunately followed it up with another similarly deep post about 'promises'. Whilst okay, it does leave you with a sense of having no idea what is going on in this blog.
1/5 - Lost in a sea of thought....
The Shotgun Groom is pretty funny a good writer and a regular poster. I'm really looking forward to the second part of his childrens story - the man has talent! Definitely worth a read and added to my blogroll.
5/5 - Very well done.
I've also added
Scattershot to my listed blogs. Been in my favourites for a while and replaced a worn out link I never went to anymore.

Gadgets
Set phasers to stun - an article about the future of crowd control. The picture does look a little dodgy tho.
I could do with a new
pc case and these are quite funky.
What about an
anti-theft handbag ladies. It has a built in fingerprint scanner so that only 'authorized people' can gain access to the contents. I think the term 'anti-theft' is a little misleading as unless its made of 3 inch thick steel it won't really stop someone from just nicking the whole bag and opening it later - which is worse if you've just spent £60 on the bag in the first place. Also adds something else to the list of 'things you have to remember to recharge at night'.
Finally,
something silly. Maybe they will realise one day that the reason people are not buying CD singles so much is that
they are a rip off!
Update on 'things'
I know, I've been pretty slack on posting the last few days. What can I say, I've had things on my mind. I did the stupid thing that I planned to do and things turned out more or less the way I expected them to. Unfortunately what I expected wasn't what I actually wanted but I never thought I'd be that lucky. Plus I'm tired - dead tired. I woke up at 4am and after an hour of trying to get back to sleep got up. Early night for me tonight I think.
Something I didn't mention yesterday was that Tim at
Bloggerheads is taking a break after his latest campaign failed to achieve what he wanted. He will be missed. Whilst I understand his reasons I do think maybe he bit off a little more than he could chew. I applaud his endeavors and he has had his fair share of successes but sometimes I think you need to pick your fights carefully.....
You may notice that my efforts to save the rainforest have stalled a little too. I had an initial small flurry of sponsors as well as an equal number of people promising to sponsor me nearer the time but after that - silence! Guess it is still about 5 weeks away so maybe I can prod people a little more nearer the time....

Email woes
I am not a happy camper! The one day that I
NEED my email to be working and 'someone' I work with starts mucking about with things and sets an autoforward to an non-existent email address for all my emails. Something which has only now become apparent after several hours, although the complete lack of emails should have given it away before then I guess.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Universe has it in for me......

Of Magic and Musings
I know I'm late posting today but it's a Friday and I've had a hard time trying to stay awake for most of the day let alone looking for interesting stuff to talk about on the old interwebnet. I'm telling you there is only so much floppy disk copying that you can do before you're brain fizzles out.
Last night I did something that I thought I would never (ever) do, and that was willingly go to the cinema to watch the latest
Harry Potter film. I really didn't like the first two films because they actually annoyed me - sooo much whining and a distinct lack of magic! This one had more of one and less of the other (I'll leave you to figure out which is which) and I did quite enjoy it. Ron still annoys me tho. Apparently the book is better and I believe I will be made to read them shortly.
Why the 'musings' in the title you might be wondering? Well, I'm contemplating doing something rather silly on Monday. Sorry, you'll have to wait for the results of that....

Gadgets
Yup,
I want one! Not sure that I wouldn't feel a little stupid walking about with headphones plugged into my watch tho?
In with the new
As I'm celebrating my first year of blogging today I thought maybe I'd look around at a few blogs that have just emerged into the blogosphere and suggest a few to maybe keep an eye on. It's interesting to try and judge a weblog on just the first post in most cases.
The first one I came across was
Thoughts of the Cat. The post topic suggest maybe this young lady was recently emotionally hurt - but what do I know. Nice, well written first post tho.
Next is the
Bosnia Project - a little lacking in anything to really go on but the subject holds promise. Then we have
Jersey Girl Genius which shows potential to become a well written and amusing blog?
You Can't Make it Up is a collection of weird stories and the like from around the interweb - prolific poster so far. Lastly is
The Shotgun Groom, a mans journey towards marriage and fatherhood.
And I'm afraid thats all. Its harder than you think to find the little nuggets of potential amidst the the overwhelming tide of young teenagers talking about 'dis blog of mine' and an hours searching is more than enough for me. Much more and I'll lose the ability to use PRoPa EngLiSh...

Due to the dullness of work I forgot all about a birthday a couple of weeks ago - for shame! On the

Down and out
Is it something in the air or just the time of year? Seems like a lot of people are having bad spells at the moment. Bjoern has not had much luck in recent weeks and
events this weekend have not exactly helped.
Breakup Babe has also hit a low spot which maybe even ice cream can not help her out of.
And me? Well my mood is not exactly matching the sunny weather outside to be honest. I've just dropped out of the trip to Prague but I'm not sure if that is a symptom of my mood? For some reason I also feel decidedly dodgy today and have a headache. Anyway, maybe some cheering up is needed so I'm stealing this from
Sandra who always seems pretty cheery.

Quickies
Almost time to go so a couple of quick things. If you have one of these high-tech smart phones then watch out as the first
worm that targets them is out. Luckily I just have a low-tech phone that does what I want - makes phone calls and sends texts. Oh, and here is a
rant about phone conversations in public. Tis annoying.
If you are a bloke with asthma you wouldn't want to get

Music
Last Friday I bought and downloaded my first album from
Magnatune. It was an album by
Memories of Tomorrow which I did mention a while back, and it cost me $6. Now I could have paid $5 but that would be a little too cheapskate and I could have paid more but there are a few tracks on the album that I'm not that keen on. In general I was pleased with the whole thing. I get an original CD quality CD for a price I was happy with and both Magnatune and the band get a few quid each for little effort. Okay, no effort besides making the music and setting up the Magnatune website respectively.
I think this is the way to go really. Apple may have launched
iTunes in the UK but it still seems too expensive to me (and what's with downloads costing more here then in the US?). The other question is will the growing and developing world of legally downloading music kill off the high street music retailers? If they can't
pull their act together then I'd say yes....
Sorry
Been a bit slack today with the old updates. Problem is I am trying to sort out a trip to
Prague with a load of friends and it seems to be getting into a mess. When it was originally suggested I thought it would be nice to go on a cheap and easy trip with a few friends. Trying to sort things out with what is now a group of about 17 people is proving difficult - especially if it is to remain cheap. I'm tempted to drop out and go on my own the following week to be honest.
Maybe if I had one of
these cars it would all be so much more simple. Of course I'd need to learn to drive first. You can do things like just
pop across the channel with them tho! And if you are going to have an amphibious car you may as well fit it with a
force field too.
Inside my mind
Giant robot dogs armed with lasers. Reporters and journalists camped outside my parents house. My brother-in-laws leg - severed at the knee and strapped with high explosive - hopping around on its own trying to blow stuff up. Those were just some of the things in a dream I had last night.
I'm a sick, sick man.....

A scientist wants to make
invisible walls. To quote
"My short-term goal would be, for example, to make a room that has no outside windows appear to have a view to the outside, then the wall would appear to be invisible."
As was pointed out on another website, would putting in some window just not be easier? I do like the fact that it relies on a new material called retro-reflectum. Sounds space age.
Old Age
I feel old. As of 3pm yesterday afternoon Uncle BlogMonkey became Great Uncle Blogmonkey with the latest addition to our family - little Tobias. Its a sad state of affairs when your nephews are having kids years before you.
The rest of the weekend was okay. The couple of pints I intended to go for with a friend on Friday night turned into a full on session in a pub that was having a
Grease night (complete with karaoke). I blame her for my hangover the next day, falling for the "would you like a double for an extra 6 pence" line from the barmaid everytime she bought me a drink. Of course the funny blue cocktail that looked like anti-freeze that the same barmaid talked me into trying may also have added to my bad head.....?
This morning I went swimming for the first time in about a month. Felt like it had been that long too. Unfortunately I ended up having to shower next to this huge bloke after my swim who started a conversation about the
match last night (a topic I shall stay quiet on) whilst soaping himself down a little
too enthusiastically for my liking if you get my drift. I didn't stay in the shower very long.

Blogathon
As you can see I have a new spiffy graphic and tagline for my charity blog thing (okay it's not that great but I not blessed with much creative talent). More importantly I have already been sponsored enough to save over an acre of rainforest thanks to two very generous people! And still about 40 days to go.
Please let me know if you want to sponsor me as well, or a little link love would be good too. At the least spread the word about
Project-blog as I'm not sure how many people know about it yet and I'm sure there are a lot of people disappointed at there being no official Blogathon this year who would love to sign up.

Power to the People
I've never made any secret of the fact that when it comes to politics I have no interest at all. I know that's bad but I just get tired of seeing all the lying, cheating and broken promises. Some parties are worse than others but to me having to choose between bad and not quite so bad is just no choice at all. So I step away.
There are a lot of people that do take an interest - that really want to try and change things and I resepct those peoples views and ideas (as I would hope they respect mine). Thats why even tho I can't directly help
Manic I will help spread the word about his current plan. He wants to show that if enough people do something, they can bring about change. So if you want to make your voice heard, now's your chance. Look out Tony!

Old people
There is an old man that lives at the end of my road. I see him every now and again dressed in his baggy trousers, brown cardigan and slippers - bent over double on his walking sticks and hobbling excruciatingly slowly from his garden gate to a point a few yards down the road. Presumably for exercise? I cringe whenever I see him.
He really shouldn't bother me that much but the first few times I walked past him I smiled jovially only to receive some undefined look and a barrage of indecipherable old person speak. Weird grunting, wheezing noises that made no sense to me at all. It almost sounded like some sort of insult but what would he have against me? I did briefly entertain the idea that he was jealous of my ability to walk quickly and without the aid of a stick but who knows.
So now I - a grown man - cringe when I see him. I have developed a technique for walking as quietly as possible whilst hugging the fence as I approach him from behind. Then I can speed up at the last minute and be past him before he even knows I'm there.
I won't even start on my fear of bumping into the inbred freaks that pass as our neighbours....

General Stuff
The badgers are back - this time with a
football theme ready for Euro 2004.
Movies and Music
A follow on from yesterday as I went home and watched a few more trailers.
Good:
The Chronicles of Riddick. A prequel (I believe) to the film
Pitch Black it basically seems like an excuse to take a good character and create a new universe for him to have adventures in without having much to do with the original film that spawned him. Looks like they may have done it right tho?!
Bad:
Catwoman. At first glance it seems to be a perfect example of how to ruin a good comicbook creation by pretty much ignoring everything in the source material. I mean just look at that outfit - what the hell is that all about (other than the obvious of trying to attract the male audience)?! And superpowers? I think I'll wait for video release for this one....
Music wise this song from
Brad Sucks has been out for a while now but I never mentioned it and it is worth mentioning as its pretty durned good -
Understood By Your Dad.
Ancient Mysteries
So someone else thinks that they have discovered the
lost city of Atlantis. I love these wild theories people have. Now don't get me wrong, you have to have a few wild theories once in a while as some of them usually turn out to be true and when you have no real evidence a leap of faith or two is all you've got. It does make me smile tho when I read people saying "If you change that measurement slightly, use a different interpretation of that word, stand on your head with one eye shut and squint with the other it matches EXACTLY!" Anyway, you can read the full article
here.
Digging a little deeper its interesting to note that
Dr Kühne is actually a Dr of Physics. He also has theories on 'The Second Kind of Light'. My days of physics are way too far in the past to comment on this......

Movies
Some upcoming movies for you.
I'd not really heard much about this but I've always quite liked Will Smith and the trailer for
I, Robot looks pretty nifty.
I've always been a fan of cartoons so its no great surprise that I quite like the look of
The Incredibles.
Lastly, it's Bigger, it's Squarier, it's Spongier - it's the new
Spongebob Squarepants Movie trailer! All I can say is "I'm ready, I'm ready!"
When I was a lad.....
I only just realised today whilst on my obligatory mid morning bar of chocolate hunt that the price of chocolate seems to have risen. When did this happen? More importantly why? Unless my brain cells are starting to exponentially die faster now that I am heading towards 30 and I'm losing my memory, it can't have been that long ago that the average price of your bar of chocolate was about 31p. Now it's about 37p! I've not done a full study (yet) but it seems to me that I'm losing out on large amounts of chocolate that I
need to help see me through the day. Need I tell you!
Or maybe I just imagined the whole thing - the result of excessive glucose on the cerebral cortex - and there never a time when
Snickers was called Marathon, you could actually suck the
sherbet up through the liquorice straw in those tubes of sherbet and a bar of chocolate was only 31p.....
Gadgets
A
selection of gadgets that might come in handy if you are going to this years
Glastonbury Festival. I especially like the 'text me home' tent that lights up when you text it. Finally a useful mobile phone feature!
On teh topic of
useless gadgets however...

Friday Fun
A couple of quickies.
For all those that would like their own
magic wands.
I printed off one of these

Blogathon
Okay its not called that this year but I am finally setting down in stone that on the 24th of July I shall be blogging for 24hrs straight to raise money for charity! What fun! My charity of choice is the
World Land Trust - I wanted to do something that would last (for a decade or two at least until the sea rises, the world freezes and we all have to live in floating igloos).
There is an official event on the same day organized by
Project-Blog but I've decided not to be part of that officially for a couple of reasons. Anyone else that wanted to take part in
Blogathon 2004 and were disappointed when it was cancelled might want to go and sign up with them tho.
Full details of my little event can be found
on this page, which I promise will be tarted up a little over the next few days (how often do I promise that?) to make it look a little less err.... bland. Anyway any support (donations wise or with a little publicity) would be appreciated.
Sorry...
... I am still here. Just working on a little something but waiting on an email before I can announce it.
Speaking of people working on secret projects, what's
Manic up to...?
Googlebomb
So
Manic wants a
Googlebomb for the word
opportunist and I say why not?! Never been part of one before and I like to try new things. Besides I was only saying to my housemate last night how much I hate the way politicians spend more time trying to make the opposition look bad than they do trying to come up with good policies of their own. Like a bunch of damn kids in the playground most of the time.
"Don't vote for them - they smell!"
So who would you Googlebomb if you could, and with what word/phrase?

"....sawed through timbers holding up the roof of the house when they got in the way..." that makes me laugh most!
Now my new digital camera is cool, but this blokes
self built camera is way up there in the coolness stakes. Producing 5x10 foot images (cos thats the biggest paper he can get) and scanned images of 2.6Gb in size you'd soon fill up your wall and hard disk. Good job he can only develop 5-8 pictures
a year!
Thought for the day
Why is a one night stand called a 'one night stand' when you usually spend most of it lying down?

Gadgets
A few little things courtesy of the links that you might have noticed creeping in over on the right.
If you keep thinking you need to exercise but can't... quite... manage.. to drag yourself away from your games console for more than 3 minutes to go to the toilet or grab a sandwich, then this could be for you. Its a combined
controller and exercise machine from
Powergrid Fitness. If its a workout you are after then ladies might prefer
this addition however.... *ahem*
For those of you that hate vacuuming, the
Trilobite 2.0.
What about these little
egg shapped mp3 players. Dead cute.
Finally comes this for those that have a little trouble nodding off or could do with the perfect nights sleep. Its the
ultimate intergrated sleep room.
UPDATE: Pointless wastle of time was the first thought that enteredmy head when I saw
this!

A Flash video of the Beatles song
Come Together. Very nice.
Embarrassed, moi?
During a conversation yesterday I asked someone what the most embarrassing thing that had happened to them was. This got me thinking about my most humiliating moment and one in particular stood out.
I was about 14 at the time and it was during an afternoon P.E session at school. Being Summer, rugby and football had been replaced with athletics on the curriculum and a hundred or so pupils were arrayed around the sports field indulging in various activities. I myself was getting ready for the 800m and for some reason that has been lost to me in the murk of time, I was determined to do well.
The race started and things were going well around the first bend and down the straight. As we reached the second bend I was keeping pace with the popular sporty boys that every school has and this pushed me to greater efforts. I wasn't going to win - I knew that - but I was going to at least be in the top 5! My legs felt like lead as I charged towards the finish line and I'm sure my lungs were at the point of bursting as I literally threw myself across the line and collapsed on the floor in a wheezing heap.
Several seconds passed before I looked up to find the teacher looking back at me quizzically and noticed at the same time that none of the other boys had stopped running. That's when it hit me that the 800m is
two laps and that everyone was looking at me!
Several people came over to me later to say how they had seen me 'fall' and how unlucky I was. I didn't feel the need to set them straight on the matter.....

General Weirdness
Try and keep up here. A teenage boy pretended to be a female spy online and ordered another boy that he had fallen in love with to
murder him because he wanted to commit suicide. Simple huh!
Okay,
ouch!!!! Not something I want to think about really.
Mmmmmmmmm,
sandwich of the Gods. I don't see any mayonnaise in there tho - got to have some mayonnaise!
Personally I don't like doing any ironing if I can help it but I'm sure
this looks like a lot more effort than the normal way of getting the creases out of your shirt. And 900 quid too!
So now if you get lost and want to find the nearest pub you can just
text Orange to find out. Or you could just ask someone....?
The problem with Bank Holiday weekends
When I know that a long weekend is coming up I tend to put off all the little things that I need to do with the excuse "I'll do it this weekend". The problem is I never do. There were so many things I needed to get done the last few days - sorting out some bank things, updating a friends webpage, updating this webpage, removing the clothes that have started to once again pile up on my bedroom floor, do some cleaning - the list is quite extensive. What did I actually do....
Well there were two nights of going out to pubs and parties. I did a little sunbathing and mowed the lawn topless (I was topless, not the lawn) in an attempt to try and get a closer match between the brown of my arms and face to the pasty whiteness of the rest of my torso. I watched some of the new series of
Big Brother (which is full of some of the most annoying people you could ever want to see on telly). Finally I started to once again play
Civ III. Bad idea - that was many hours wasted right there!
Maybe if I draw up a to-do list next time...?
