Woman asks French president to allow her to die. Makes you think.
""In 2000, I lost my sense of smell and taste, and then the tumour evolved and ate into my jaws, before attacking the eye socket. I lost my sight in October last year," she said."

Pointless research of the day - Congestion charge 'Boosts' health. Seems like a good figure - 1888 extra years of life. Then you realise that it works out at about 35 extra minutes per person per year. Just enough time to grab a sarnie and a cup of coffee before you cark it then.

It's almost as pointless as this one. I just made myself some toast - must be owed at least 50p for that...

In the news
Who says nothing exciting ever happens around these parts. I would say it woke me up but I'm sure I was awake a few seconds before the earth started moving - strange sixth sense or maybe I'm just a light sleeper?

What always get's me is how people first assume it's a bomb/plane crash/gas explosion and only think about earthquakes later on. I mean most people will have never experienced any of those things but should generaly know that an earthquake involves rumbling and earth shaking....

Bit harsh maybe but considering it was pretty small compared to others, the country is making a very big deal of it. I just lay in bed enjoying an interesting experience and then went back to sleep.

Interesting article on fish farming an sustainability. I didn't actually realise so much fish was farmed these days. Thing is I didn't eat much fish until Miss C got me into it a couple of years back. I actually saw it as a greener food than beef or pork but now I'm cutting back on how much of it I eat - at least until I find a few good options. Like carp (apparently).

And sticking with the doom and gloom, bye bye bees and the plants they pollinate?

I have to say that it doesn't seem like a good time to live in the UK if you believe in things like freedom of speech, privacy and civil liberties in general. In the last week or so alone we've seen calls made (and rejected for now) for a national DNA database, large amounts of data passed to the government for anyone traveling within the EU and lastly for ISPs to police the internet (although most think that it's unworkable). You have to wonder if it's only a matter of time before all this and more comes in....?

The number of Facecrack users declines last month. Meaningless blip or the beginning of the end as people move to the next social networking fad?

Just be careful folks, this stuff can get addictive (earplugs may be needed for that vid...).

Actually I'd quite like to see those two going up against each other in a debate.

How crud is this - the UK installed 270 photovoltaic cells on houses last year compared to 130,000 in Germany (same as two normal power stations worth of leccy). I mean I know some people might say that PV cells are not really worth it currently but still, shows how much encouragement people have to be green in the UK. But apparently we are still showing "leadership" in the area. Pffft.

The best laid plans
My plan for valentines day was a simple one. Take some or all of the day off, sneak around to Miss C's flat, fill the living room with candles and flowers (does three bunches of flowers count as 'filled'?) and have a tasty three course meal ready to be served at the shortest notice when she got home. It wasn't until I actually had to start implementing the plan that I realized how much effort it was though.

I'd done some preparation - tested all three course (this, this and a variation of this), found a nice bottle of vino, bought the candles and some of the flowers etc.. I thought it would be easy to take everything around but when I started packing, it became apparent just how much stuff there was.

The result was several round trips to move everything. Combine that with trips to the supermarket for fresh veg, home and work to send her emails to keep the illusion of actually being at work myself and one trip home just to fetch a bottle of walnut oil i'd forgotten to pack meant I ended up walking about 10 miles. If I was fit, no problem. In my current state - urghhh....

Still, worked out ok in the end. I managed to light the last candle just as she walked through the door and the food all worked well (albeit witht he main course taking slightly longer than planned). I shan't mention my flower arranging skills...

Next year she's getting a box of chocolates. ;)

I'm absolutely and totally bloody knackered! My legs feel like they've walked 20 miles. Serves me right for being so damn unfit I guess.

As to why I'm knackered, well you'll have to wait until tomorrow to find that out....

So you may remember a couple of weeks back that a group of hackers/protesters going by the name Anonymous launched an attack on Scientology. Oh there are some strange folk out in interwebnet land. At first I thought it was Dr Albran (wasn't that the music to a sanitary towel comercial?) but it is of course Haddaway.

Thinking about love songs reminded me of this as well. And of course love leads on to other things (still love that video).

UK carbon emissions drop by 0.1%. Personally I think far to much emphasis is placed on carbon emissions but the interesting point here is about domestic emissions I think - maybe the message is getting through and people are starting to act?
"The figures are estimates for 2005-2006. Mr Benn said that the decrease in emissions from the residential sector of 4%, repeating a similar success in 2005, was a hopeful sign."
