Classic stuff - it appears T-Mobile think they have a trademark on magenta headings. How to look stupid lesson 1.

Still, it's more amusing than the PR disaster the boys over at Creative have managed this last week. I think they got away with it tho..

Sort of following on from the previous post, is Virgin Media the first UK ISP to work towards preventing the pirates?

Good idea? Nah. Even if the government brings in regulations it won't be for a while. In the meantime lots of people will leave Virgin for other less regulated ISPs. Then there is the issue of how exactly the decide what is legal and what is not? They can't simply go by bandwidth usage anymore - iPlayer and Joost both create that (and use P2P). Finally, sooner or later a nice anonymous P2P program/network will surface and everything will be back to where we are now.

Flogging a dead horse anyone?

Something I happened across on my travels - Divlix. Of course it's a bit naughty so I have never used it.

On a totally unrelated note, I watched the new Rambo film recently. If you want a movie with tons blood and gore and finishes with a full five minutes of meaningful looks, this is the flick for you!!

You know when you are playing online games and you say you'll just help someone out but it takes longer than you think. And you know you should stop to do important things like eat as you are starting to feel a bit woozy as Ribena doesn't seem to replace food but you can't possibly abandon your online chums. And finally after six and a half solid hours you get to eat (takeaway as it's far too late to cook) but then have to stay up even later to let your food digest. And then you spend the next day feeling really tired.

You know when that happens?

?

Just me then....

In the news
I don't normally post such pointless stories as this (well ok I do but shush) but this quote just made me laugh.
"These aren't just swamp leeches though - we are talking about highly trained medical leeches."
So was she joking or does she think each has a little qualification certificate...?

Rip and save
It's amazing how easily you can waste whole days and achieve very little - and with the extra days I get over Easter thanks to work I've had more than most to waste. That's not to say I've achieved nothing however. For instance I spent many (many) hours looking into the best way to rip... errr.. backup DVDs. Well if they refuse to release this in region two format I don't see why I should feel guilty about buying it cheaper from the US and then making myself a copy that does work.

I mean if I was really a naughty boy I'd just get it from other sources....

I also spent a fair while looking at my finances. It's a little stupid that I only ever really do that as the tax year draws to an end as I miss out on various other opportunities throughout the year. Comes from being lazy I guess. If someone walked up to me in the street and said "Want this £100? Free!" you can probably guess what I'd say. But if that free £100 involves a couple of days effort and the odd form to fill in to move to a savings account with a better interest rate then I - and I expect a lot of people - just can't be arsed. Daft really. Guess it's easier sticking with what you know/have.

That said, I have made the effort this time and all that is left is to decide if these folks shall get my hard earned pennies. You'd probably think it's not a hard choice - good interest rates, can do everything online, easy transfers etc.. but I did my research. The big question is how likely do I think the economy of Iceland will collapse.

Anyone got a good crystal ball?

You may have heard this little anti-gay speech by Oklahoma state lawmaker Sally Kern a week or so ago? You'd think people would have learnt in this day and age to not say stuff like that if they don't want it on the internet. They should also learn that it's quite easy to track things via the internet and some editing of her webpage made some folks a little suspicious.

Explains a lot....

Tasty and I can build walls with it.
Ever see that episode of the Simpsons where Homer )eats powersauce bars and climbs a mountain? There's this one bit at dinner where he takes his meal and compresses it to the size small chocolate bar.

That's what my bread turned out like. One small slice is equivalent to about eight normal sandwiches. I think I need to refine my technique somewhat.

Weird
One slice or two?
I'm baking bread. How domesticated am I?

Now, if the bit in the instructions where it says "Leave for a couple of hours until the dough has doubled in size" should actually read "Leave for a couple of hours until it sort of looks slightly larger" then I'm on for a cracking good loaf. I'm sure it won't matter, people are always telling me size isn't everything....

Bugger - send help!
So I'm sat at home at the moment in a slightly unusual situation. I'm trapped. In my coat.

Got in, went to undo it and the pull toggle thing on the zipper fell off. No problem I though, I'll just work it down without that...

No luck - it's stuck fast.

As it is also a very windy and cold day I'd done my coat right up. So far up that my head won't fit through the hole in the top. So I'm sat here with my coat around my neck (I managed to get my arms out), wondering what exactly I do considering I'm supposed to be taking Miss C out for dinner in 20 minutes.

Any suggestions? ;)

Update: Freedom!! I ripped it off. Think the coat is still ok - asl long as I don't ever want to do it up again....

Green IT.
So much to do, so little time to blog. Well, that's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it.

I have managed to achieve at least one constructive thing recently (just not blogging). Last week the 'strategic plan' for my department was released. I of course read through the plan to see what changes were on the way and how they might affect me....

Ok so I opened it up and upon seeing that it was more than two pages long, closed it again assuming that I'd soon hear gossip about anything really controversial. Then someone mentioned that there was actually a section on the 'green agenda'. Sure enough there was - which pleased me - but it seemed to be mostly the same old ideas that you see pretty much everywhere. Save energy (and money of course) by turning stuff off when not in use, make more use of virtualization, use multifunction devices to cut back on separate printers/photocopiers/scanners etc.. All good but lacking in imagination slightly I felt.

So I started off a professional looking email (you can use smilies and still be professional - right? Never mind...) to the big boss lady that outlined a few ideas I had. Looked pretty good to begin with and then sort of degenerated into me going "Ooh, ohhh, we can try this too!" as I got more into it. Well maybe not quite that bad but I'm fairly confident I was randomly waffling by the end of it.

Still, I though I was on to some good stuff. Things like using companies near the top of the Greenpeace green list, not replacing our keyboards, mice and monitors every time we get new computers and a Freecycle like scheme to try and cut down on throwing old hardware away.

Will my ideas make it into policy? Who knows. Worth a try though.

Who would have thought, you film yourself throwing a puppy off a cliff (link is safe and doesn't go to the vid), post it online and oddly, it doesn't make you a very popular man with the internet community. Well, his Bebo page was popular until he made it private but not in the way he would have liked I'm guessing.

Oh there is a fair chance the dog was already dead but still, how much of a tit do you have to be?

Fly me away...
I hate waking up in the early hours and pointlessly worrying about something for no good reason. This morning it was whether I will get my passport back (it's expired and needs renewing) before mid-May. Why mid-May you ask. Well, Miss C and I are off here.

Ok, that's a big place so I'll be more specific. We are catching this to here where we will stay a couple of days. Then it's by train to this nice place for several relaxing days before a quick stop here before coming back with these folks.

Yes I know I shouldn't fly as I'm 'Mr Green' but seriously, the Eurostar does it's best to discourage you with it's crappy website and prices. I'll donate to save some rainforest as I normally do.

Can't wait though. A week off work and all that good food and nice wine! If I get my passport back (which involves sending it at some point soon).....

You see a lot of people arguing that there is man made climate change. A lot saying the whole thing is made up by governments and business in order to make money. Loads saying there is climate change but it's natural and nothing to do with us and a vast majority that have no idea what to believe. Not often you see someone saying there is climate change, it's all our fault but screw it, nothing we can do anyway.

I have to agree with some of what he says. Sometimes when I see reports of animal x being extinct in ten years or rainforest y no longer existing in twenty I feel a bit sad and helpless that it will come to that. But then sometimes I can't help but wonder if maybe something extreme does have to happen before people stop sticking their heads in the sand and falling back on that old "we'll sort it out tomorrow" attitude. I feel a bit guilty for thinking that - that some disaster affecting thousands (if not millions) of people is 'needed' but looking at it logically, it's probably going to happen. Just look at China and the direction it's heading.

Can't agree with the guy that we should do nothing however. If things are going to have to change one day, may as well get a head start on it now even if it's only a small start.
