The
supermarket of the future? I'm not even sure where to begin with how stupid some of that stuff is. How is using your mobile to self scan barcodes any easier than letting people use purpose made barcode scanners? I know some supermarkets tried that a while back and did it revolutionize shopping? Nope. God help you if your battery dies before you get to the checkout....
If they are using RFID tags on food, why not just tag everything so that you're whole trolley is totaled up as you walk through the till?
I do like the wine tasting idea however.

In the news
As usual it seems the press are following every little thing old Amy Winehouse does and are reporting her (apparent)
attempt to punch a fan. What they seem to be ignoring is that she sounded sh*t and looked orange! What's up with that?

Not having a telly means I've not seen it but
this comercial is apparently
causing a fuss. Or it was until it was pulled.
Meh, fuss about nothing. I did like one of the comments on the BBC page:
"Seeing same sex kissing is stomach-churning to most people who are not homosexual."
Yes, ask any random man what they think about seeing two women kissing and stomach-churning is going to be what they say (whilst hiding their crotch with a cushion)....

I thought this was going to be a bit of a dull article when I started reading but it was actually quite interesting and gave me
new knowledge on bananas. 1000 varieties, we eat a less tasty sort than folk of old and it could be set to become a rare luxury. Never new any of that.

Tight times ahead
Ah great - my bills are
going up again then. Might be the incentive I need to stop spending so long in the shower in the morning (very bad habit) as it's one of my big energy usages.
On top of that I had some people around to value my flat last week. Now it could mean nothing and be just what the landlord says it was - him wanting to re-mortgage the place. Or I could be in for a rent increase. Or be out on the street as he gets cold feet in the housing market and bails on his investment.
How could he do that to me? I'm too lazy to move!

Games
Spore has been in development (and eagerly anticipated) for quite a while now. A strange mix of various types of games, it's going to appeal to a lot of people. The idea that you can design a species from basic DNA and watch it progress all the way up to being a galactic civilization which interacts with tens of thousands of other player created species has got to make it popular. Assuming they do it right of course. It could just be a massive disappointment much in the way the novelty of having my own creature to train in
Black and White wore off when I found he wasn't really that intelligent. You'd spend ages slapping the thing around and making you watch as you threw fireballs and he'd forget everything you'd taught him 5 minutes later.
If you'd like a taster of Spore tho, check out the
creature creator demo.

It's interesting to see how the high oil prices are affecting things. It's making some
drive less and buy
a lot more fuel efficient cars. There have been
lots of protests and all the while governments are seem to think the answer is
pump more oil or
drill for more in your own backyard.
If prices keep going up, I wonder what more is to come?

I see loads of green building projects or ideas on my wanders around the internet nowadays but this idea for
a floating ecopolis is quite interesting as I don't think it's hard to foresee a day when either overpopulation on rising sea levels force people to live elsewhere. I mean some countries are already coming up with
strange ideas for creating more space.

Am I what I eat?
I'm doing something I've never done before - I'm watching my calories. It all started last night when I was working my way through a rather large bag of maltesers and Miss C pointed out how many calories that bag contained.
I stared back with a vacant expression.
Seems she expected me to know that 500Kcal was a lot but for someone that has never had a problem with my weight (regardless of what I eat I've stayed 10 stone or under for as long as I can remember) it meant nothing to me. Which is bad, I know.
As you might remember I stared jogging again a few weeks back (still keeping it up - just) and again on the suggestion of Miss C, I stopped eating sugar last week and switched to sweetener. I should have done that a long time ago really seeing as I eat a 500g bag of sugar in about 2 weeks normally.
Yes, I still have teeth (probably cos I stopped eating the golden syrup straight out the tin years ago. And the icing sugar).
Countering the good things I've been doing was the fact that I had two takeaways, a fair bit of alcohol and went to a BBQ this week. So I'm keeping a track of my calorie/fat/salt intake this next week or so as although I may not look fat, I'm certainly not highly toned and god knows what's going on inside....

energy and water saving washing machine. I'm not sure about lugging 20Kg of cleaning chips home from the supermarket or what you do with them after tho. Tis one step closer to the old

Nice to see the UK is finally making an effort with
recycling here rather than shipping stuff to other countries. Why it takes so long is beyond me considering the plant cost £13 million, recycled plastic is worth £800 a tonne and we dump 1.2 million tonnes of (albeit mixed) plastic a year. Seems plenty of potential for profit there....
Less bright is the
destruction of Africa and
whole countries.

Film
I have to admit that I do like a bit of
Statham. His films may often border on the downright daft but they are usually pretty entertaining.
Transporter 3 is out soon (I just had a hunt around online for the second in the series to watch) and so is
Death Race.
Considering how weird
the original was, that could be a laugh.
The film I'm especially looking forward to tho is
Crank 2. Crank was just a MANIC film. Quite how you manage to make a sequel given how the first ended is beyond me.....

I've often read about the recent plight of bees but
this article does a good job of going into some detail. Plus I never knew bees were trucked around to help pollinate different crops...
On the animal theme, seems New Zealand are well on the way to stopping
farmyard animals farting. Sounds like a bit of a silly story but when you realize how much that methane contributes to a countries greenhouse emissions, it's quite a big step.

Environment
It's interesting how quickly things change sometimes. The growing tide of 'green awareness' has done little more than change peoples attitudes enough to slightly slow our over consumption and environmental destruction. Instead chuck in stupidly high oil prices which help to cause an economic slowdown and high food prices and all of a sudden lifestyles are changing. More out of an interest in saving money than living a sustainable life but it's the same finishing point.
This article does a reasonable job of summing things up.
Considering people have been warning about this sort of thing (
peak oil and the like) for a years it's interesting to watch it actually going on. And happen so fast. Not that I'm saying we have hit peak oil but the symptoms are similar.
Totally different topic - no pressure on
