A new year, a new decade, first day back at work – I feel so motivated!
Ok, that’s a blatant lie.
Maybe it’s just ‘first day back at work after nearly two weeks off’ syndrome. Could be the news we got late last year that my section is being slightly restructured and I’ll need to take on new areas of work. Could be that any regrade of my salary to take into account the new work – and all the new stuff I’ve taken on in the last 24 months – is fairly unlikely (or at least that’s my reading of the situation). Yup, that’ll motivate you.
Still, it’s not all bad news. Over a year since I suggested it, I’ve finally been given the go ahead to create a subsection of our departmental website devoted to green IT. Not totally sure what I’m going to put in it yet although I have a few ideas. My main hope (and aim) is that it’s mere existence and visibility will motivate people in the department to get involved. To think about how they work and encourage them to suggest content for the website or projects that could be undertaken. If enough people do get involved, that might change environmental issues from being an afterthought into a core part of the departmental ethos…
Well, I can dream.
