I’ve always thought those phone apps that allow you to scan in a barcode and compare the price of the item with online stores or other shops were a bit pointless. If I’m shopping for something big odds on it will be cheaper online and I’ll have already done my research to find the best price. If it’s my weekly supermarket shop, knowing that the tin of beans is 4p cheaper at the tesco down the road is going to annoy me rather than make me go to tesco straight afterwards.

In this case I can see it might be useful. Being able to tell the environmental credentials of a products before buying it would probably change my mind on a few purchases – those which exploit poor countries or contain palm oil, etc. Not that I have a phone that runs apps or has a camera anyway…
