I’d heard of the Passenger Pigeon before and whilst I knew it was hunted to extinction, I’d never really read up about it. Then something tweaked my curiosity the other night and so I did a little reading on that Wikipedia link. Interesting stuff and a lesson in how mankind can really screw things up in short order if they try. And yet still we do it (overfishing for example).
It lived in enormous migratory flocks—sometimes containing more than two billion birds—that could stretch one mile (1.6 km) wide and 300 miles (500 km) long across the sky, sometimes taking several hours to pass.
Must have been an amazing sight. Always cloning I guess….
